PSA: New Label Borgo de Nor Has the Dreamiest Summer Dresses
When you work with our editor-in-chief Laura Brown, it doesn’t take long to realize she’s got a Spidey sense for finding great maxi dresses. Out of the five days a week we’re in the same office, I’d say she averages at least three styles that warrant a double take when she passes my desk. A floaty micro-bloom number one morning, a five alarm red design the next—really, they’re all fantastic.

So when she directed the fashion department’s attention toward the new, dress-focused brand Borgo de Nor (I believe her exact description was, “these are GORG!”) last week, we weren’t surprised discover a treasure trove of long, breezy silhouettes in vibrant colors and unforgettable prints. Basically, if you can picture exactly what you want to be wearing while sipping rosé on a rooftop at sunset, you’ll get a sense of the whole collection.

“We wanted to create the perfect summer dress that transitions straight from the city to holiday,” former editor and consultant Carmen Borgonovo, who just launched the label in May with her friend and luxury wholesaler Joana de Noronha (Borgo de Nor is a catchy mash-up of their two last names), told me over email. “We wanted to evoke a sense of fantasy and femininity.”
For them, that meant seeking out fresh ideas from their respective South American backgrounds in El Salvador and Portugal, vintage prints, and powerful female artists. The latter inspiration includes Frida Kahlo and Leonora Carrington, a painter who’s surrealist work informed the aesthetic for the sprinkling of abstract jewelry throughout the label. In time, the pair hopes to expand their accessories range even further, eventually adding in shoes and bags.
But however much the company grows, its DNA will always be resort-ready maxis. Says Borgonovo: “There’s nothing more uplifting than slipping into a dress that makes you feel beautiful.” Hey, we’ll lift our glass of rosé to that.
